At first glance, you might be in SHOCK! However, if you are a legit designer and are heavily involved in all things design and branding, then this should not shock you at all - as a matter of fact, you should be used to Sagmeister’s off the beaten path sort of advertising.

The big news is that Sagmeister has now partnered up with young gun Jessica Walsh. This young designer has exploded onto the design scene and she is close to half Sagmeister’s age —- this says a lot, and frankly it seems well deserved. So why not join in on the chaos that is Sagmeister advertising… In the nude…

And if we may interject… WOW, simply WOW!!! Jessica Walsh, you make design oh so so worth it :)

Hipster Branding

	CLIENT: John Langham

	BUSINESS: Retail

	TYPE: Clothing / Apparel

PROBLEM: To develop a logotype that would embody the client’s middle america, traditional rural upbringing.

SOLUTION: Field research in actual swap meets, flea markets, garage sales and antique store visits. Originally we were set on using the old Rooster weather vanes, typically found in the south and in the midwest. However, after careful research we found that the image was quite the cliche in those same rural areas. They were used in everything from places selling fried puff pastries to auto shops. Eventually we stumbled upon what looked like a giant belt buckle. The metal object looked like something out of “National Treasure” with Nicholas Cage. We focused on the inifity type of snake symbol, and the star. We took the circular snake and applied an undulating effect to it, and made it subtle so that it didnt immediately pop-out and SCREAM “SNAKE!” we wanted it more as a decorative graphic element. The type-face was the real key here… We took days trying to type-set —- it was our main key element to making this feel just right. After finding the right serif type-face, we then printed it on the wrong side of photo paper. The result was a blotchy bleeding effect, and we instantly fell in love with it; we scanned it immediately, and ta-daaa! There you have it, the John Langham clothing collection logo-type.

BLAND BRANDING

“Sigtuna is a micro brewery in the city of Sigtuna, outside Stockholm. The brewery was founded in 2005 by a number of beer enthusiasts. The brewery has received nomerous awards for its beer and the success continues.

The new label design aims to highlight the premium image of the different beers. Today Sigtuna is sold both at the monopoly retailer ”Systembolaget” and the finest restaurants”

Normally we are in awe of anything swedish design, but this is one instance where the branding, and especially the insight from the design team, simply states… NOTHING.

Although the bottle design is different, in a subtle way, and the typography and choice of graphic elements are very clean… The real question is… “WHY THE CHICKEN?” - in a market flooded by traditional design, illustrative designs, and sometimes off the wall designs, especially when it comes to wine labels these days, beer labels have a long way to catch up.

This is a case, where the image or iconography should speak in volumes to its content. We definitely do get the sense that this is a high end craft brew, but the story, or the narrative is simply not there.

An Homage to California!

Besides the silly gangs that fight over the color of their bandanas, there are so many wonderful and amazing things to love about California!

From the city life, to outdoor life, California has it all, and Lydia Nichols, cleverly captures it all with her very illustrative and emotive packaging for Sangwine.

“Sangwine, an invented vineyard, is all about embracing the California lifestyle. Each bottle features something quintessentially Californian from the PCH to the redwood forest.”

When people look at a logo they should want to visualize something that is not going to become an obscene object or another object that doesn’t even relate to what is being shown to them. It takes time and effort to actually come up with good design or work in general. Which brings up the conclusion of you get what you paid for, don’t be cheap when it comes to something that you want because in the end you’ll have to pay twice as much for it.

Another Car Logo

With the revival of Nissans subcompany Datsun comes a new logo. They have butchered the classic logo that was Datsun to a genric car logomark of the early 2000’s, with the 3D effect and spotlight shine to it. Bringing no orginality to it puts the what the designers who made it put its past to shame.

You Fancy?

	Let’s face it,...

BREAKING THE ANTICIPATED CLICHE STANDARD

Let’s face it, cliche’s are inevitable and there is always a way to deal with them in a clever way, or in an unexpected way - but in the end the best outcome you can wish for is to rid your designs of the horrible and menacing cliche.

Murray Brand has done that, especially with the tall order from Sunnyside Farms… A complete overhaul of the 300+ SKU inventory of Sunnyside.

What they managed to accomplish was clever and inviting. They took the elements from a farm and focused on a element that was not only inviting to people of all ages, but most of all provided a narrative with layers, texture, and great illustration. The result… “Happy birds on a fence” that’s it, that’s all it took to take this drab cliche brand into a more fulfilling, local feeling product that simply made you wanna try it more than ever.

Below are more samples of the overhaul… We are absolutely in LIKE with this before and after.

This is a once in a lifetime shot taken by British photographer James Appleton. In this shot he captures an epic Aurua-Borealis volcano shot that took place in Iceland. One word sums this all up… MAGICAL!

LOGO FRIDAYS - MERCENARY RACER

There are many brands you truly get invested in, they almost feel like a child; so when the day comes you have to pat them on the back and wish them a great day on their first day of school… You secretly are anxious and nervous, because for the first time you are truly without that little one and they are off on their own without you.

Maybe that is a bit of an exaggeration, but when you feel you have developed a logo that you simply cannot stop looking at, because everytime you look at it you see how involved and how much passion you put into it - maybe that analogy is not so far off.

The logo is for MERCENARY RACER aka MERC RACER, and we dove headfirst into this one. During our summer long roadtrip in 2011, we’ve made stops almost in ever state from Miami beach to Detroit, even up to Cananda and back down again to Texas. By chance encounter during a “Dream Cruise” (Detroit’s classic car cruising show) we saw a lot of great rides, and some rare bikes, but the best of all, we saw some cafe-racers, oh yes, cafe racers is our kyptonite. We see one, and we cant help but to OOOOO and AHHHHH. We took down a number, gave the crew a call, and wala a small startup is born.

THE CHALLENGE: The task at hand was a difficult one, how do we take a very small group of rag tag misfits, and present to them a logo that will not only break the big GM and classic british and japanese bike mold, but will still make it feel original and let it stray on a controlled level?

THE SOLUTION: Detroit is more than just classic cars and the BIG 3 auto companies, it is home to was once a powerhouse of american industry and now a phoenix trying to rise from the ashes; it is where ROCK N ROLL lives, and has thrived and helped it’s rise. So with that said, we took on that rock n roll approach, but more specific, the PUNK look. Across the pond, and in the slums of NY and of course in Detroit, we did a ton of research on the PUNK scene, and its anarchist mentality. We felt this was one task that couldn’t rely just on some tight sketches and a computer render… So we got hands on!

THE RESULT: The end result led to developing a grenade, sure it seems kind of cliche, you think Mercenary you think, soldier, mask, guns, sniper symbol and sure even a grenade. Oh but this grenade was special, it was born out of frustration and emotion —- a simple tearing of paper, led to a collection of shapes, and then those paper shapes looked as though something blew up and created some weird series of shapes —- we joked and said it was a “paper-bomb”. So we got to thinking, what if we went with a sort of classic yet unconventional grenade! The end result a tearing of paper forming shapes to eventually form a grenade. But why stop there? It went on and on, until we made the entire logo a series of just tears and cut outs. Once rendered you cant really see those wrinkles, and those frays and tears, but if you look close, you will still see the slight imperfections, and most of all you will see this is a logo that does embody that hands on approach… Sorry Abobe, we have been unfaithful… There is nothing like getting primal and just getting hands on and ripping, shredding and cutting your way to some awesome results!

HOW TO DETERMINE WHEN TO FIRE YOUR CLIENT - Part 7
	THE MISERLY...

HOW TO DETERMINE WHEN TO FIRE YOUR CLIENT - Part 7

THE MISERLY CLIENT - Basically this client will nickle and dime you throuhout the entire process. Worst off the complaints in pricing aren’t the worst part, it’s listening to the excuses and the price comparisons.

Often a big part of being a business owner and being active in the sales portion of your business, you are able to observe your clients and determine what kind of client they will be in the long run. For the most part we stay away from individual startups, and young startups —- we rather deal with people who have life experience, but most all, business experience. Clients like these can easily be avoided - if during the negotiation process you see them haggling you from the start… Stay away.
